More details on the first series of events....
Sprint Triathlon - a 800m Swim, 20km Bike ride, followed by 5km run to finish.
“What predicted time did you enter for your swim time in the entry form?” Asked Rick, the Club Chairman, the night before the start of the Cheltenham Tri. “Can’t remember” I said. “I think about 10mins” - which would have been my ‘target’ time to swim 400m, being quite a slow swimmer. A pause. “Gary - we’re doing a 800m swim tomorrow!” That innocent error put me in the lane with the ‘elite swimmers’ those who would about twice as fast!
A straighforward parkrun during a weekend down the Gower
Climbed the iconic Pen-y-fan mountain wth Angel Jones - enjoying the peaceful 'secret' scenic route to embrace the splendour of South Wales' highest mountain, passing over Corndu mountain and looking down on the beautiful Brecon valley, followed by a Dip in the cool clean crisp lake as we descended below the Summit

Ride along the scenic western part of the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal before meeting Jo for the Brecon 'Y Promenad' parkrun. After a coffee, it was time to head back along teh canal to get home.
The "Burn 6" Adventure Race in Margam Park, near Swansea on 12 October 2024 was a multi-discipline endurance event involving running, mountain biking and kayaking - and map reading! The course was 100% off road.
“It’s plantar fasciitis” said Clare calmly, as she inspected my sore foot. I’d been ramping up my running distance as I approached the Marathon Eryri, and my foot had getting steadily worse. It was time to go to the Pediatrist. Its planta facitis said Clare again. “Ok, great…..so now we have a name for it - how can we fix it, and when can I start running again?”.
Every setback in training is like a mini challenge. There’s a new mini-goal and something new to learn. Knowing I actually had a plantar fascia running from my heel to my toes was the first thing I leant. I enthusiastically went through the exercise sheet and thought it would only be matter of days, before I went running again. Well it didn’t get better, not well enough to go running (a bit like having a pebble, under my heel) which is why I ended up walking the whole marathon.
I thought about postponing, but secretly hoped it would recover in time if I just rested and worked through the exercise sheet. I checked marathon T&Cs and saw it was a generous cut off time - and as long as I could walk 4miles an hour I would be fine. And the weather forecast was gorgeous.
In the end I walked almost 4.5miles an hour and finished in under 6hrs. There were still 200 ‘runners’ behind me, the slowest taking almost 8hrs. I did suffer afterwards, and hobbled around for a few days before it calmed down again. But I did it - I’d completed my first ever road marathon. One of the toughest, but with amazing views.
My foot had recovered slightly from the Eryri marathon, so this time I managed to run the full 5miles (at a slow pace).
A magical night-swim in the glorious surroundings of a private lake set in 200 acres of stunning Monmouthshire countryside with Angela Jones and team.
A cracker of a Christmas parkrun with the James family, and cycle home from Abergavenny along the canal.
